Ancient Greece was made up from different states. They all had their own laws and coins. They were cut off from each other by sea and deep valleys so the easiest way to travel was by boat. They were often at war with each other.

council made up of wise men helped them make decisions.

In Athens all citizens who were not slaves were allowed to speak at open air meetings, called Assemblies. If there were at least 6,000 citizens, voting could take place by raising their hands. Citizens spoke out but had to stop when the last drop of water had dripped out of a jar - this was to stop people speaking too long. |

The Parthenon in Athens was made from white marble an was in honour of the goddess Athena. It was built on a hill to tower above the city. |
